Integrating Spanish and Health in Nicaragua offers a great opportunity for students interested in a career in the healthcare industry to study Spanish in a medical context, live with a host family in the quaint colonial city of Granada, learn about the healthcare system of Nicaragua, and work side by side with Nicaraguan doctors in an ambulatory clinic.
In a three-week period, students will complete 3 credit hours towards the Global Perspectives requirement and the Spanish major/minor or the CAS foreign language requirement. For both courses, students will complete online assignments and conversations prior to and after the hands-on work and class time in Nicaragua. Students can only register for ONE of the courses offered.
SPN 203 – Spanish for Health Care is an intermediate-level course designed to familiarize students with medical vocabulary and common illnesses while furthering knowledge of Spanish grammar and the development of speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills. Prerequisite: successful completion of SPN 201 or placement test score for SPN 211/202. Note: SPN 203 meets the College of Arts and Sciences language requirement and can be taken instead of SPN 202.
SPN 341 - Advanced Conversational Spanish provides intensive oral practice to further develop students’ oral proficiency while increasing students’ awareness of Hispanic culture. The course will focus on strategies to raise students’ current level of proficiency from an Intermediate to Advance as defined on the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Proficiency Guidelines www.actfl.org. This course will provide students with a contextualized content-based approach to oral communication resulting in fluent oral language production. Even though, the emphasis of this course is on oral proficiency and not on grammar, reading, writing and listening skills are also practiced. Reading and listening materials provide opportunities for students to be exposed to authentic language use, and to integrate these forms into their speaking and writing. Prior to departure students will be required to meet with instructor and complete recorded conversations. Prerequisite: SPN 311. Note: SPN 341 fulfills part of the Spanish major and minor requirements.
While in Nicaragua, all students will focus on practicing conversational skills to interact with host families, doctors and patients. Furthermore, students will engage in hands-on service learning with doctors and patients.
