Americans in Berlin introduces you to the strategic uses of culture as soft power, defined as the ability to attract and co-opt, rather than coerce. 
A hybrid course of one week intensive online classes and three weeks in Berlin, this program examines the influences of American culture on German society after World War II. It explores the strategic uses of soft power and public diplomacy globally, by focusing on cultural exchanges across ideological and political boundaries during the Cold War. You will have the opportunity to visit political institutions and architectural sites in East and West Berlin, and study public institutions and monumesubject to

  • availability);
  • entrance to the DDR Museum;
  • entrance to the Stasi Museum with the services of a professional, English-speaking guide;
  • visit and guided tour of the Hohenschönhausen Memorial;
  • ticket for the TV Tower;
  • visit to the American Academy in Berlin, and a public boat tour in Wannsee;
  • visit to the broadcasting studios of Deutsche Welle;
  • ticket for a jazz concert or opera, theater or ballet performance;
  • full-day excursion to Potsdam including round-trip public transportation, private touring bus in Potsdam, and entrance with guided tour to the Cecilienhof Palace and the Sanssouci Palace;
  • farewell group dinner;
  • access to the wireless-enabled AIFS Student Center for computer and printing services, and an AIFS Tour Manager for information, personal advising/counseling and 24-hour emergency contact service;
Costs
Based on an enrollment of 10-14 participants, the fee per person is  $2795.

This fee excludes airfare, passport or visa fees, meals other than those listed, personal expenses, Miami University tuition or administrative fees, optional insurance  upgrades, textbooks, additional field trips or excursions required by faculty and anything not specified.
